Course Outline & Objectives: | The Future of Concrete Construction
This topic will address ACI 318 and ACI 301.
Concrete industry leaders have joined together to identify the challenges to cast-in-place concrete construction and to come up with a roadmap to improve. We have identified the following problems and some proposed solutions:
? Quality & Resilience/Durability of Concrete Construction and Repair: Should the industry develop a contractor certification program to qualify/certify contractors for certain types and sizes of projects?
? Consequences of Poor Design: Contract documents are often poorly written and incomplete. Designs can be overly complex. How can architects and engineers be motivated to provide better plans in advance? How can they design with constructability in mind? Can we nurture a feedback loop so that contractors and designers discuss a project after completion to try to improve the process?
? Poor Productivity: Productivity in concrete construction has actually declined over the past ten years. What means can be brought to bear to improve productivity and profitability? Could the use of prefabrication lead to increased efficiency and quality? Is 3D printing of concrete structures in our future?
? Workforce Supply: Concrete contractors have great difficulty finding knowledgeable and motivated workers, especially younger workers. Programs like the Concrete Industry Management schools and the Concrete Preservation Institute are helping to provide trained workers?how can we increase this? How can we bring more women and minorities into the business? How can we train foremen level workers in management and finance?
? Industry image: Concrete is frequently thought of as difficult and dirty work. And timber construction is beginning to create inroads to traditionally concrete markets. The National Ready-Mixed Concrete Association is fighting this but what else can be done? The Portland Cement Association has developed statistics to use for promoting concrete construction.
