Course Outline & Objectives:2020 NEC Solar PV Plan Review Class Solar photovoltaic (PV) system installations continue to increase throughout the country. Thorough plan reviews and inspections are essential for their safe installation. This full day course will give many examples of different types of solar PV systems and will walk the class step by step through the plan review process for each one. The course will explain key requirements concerning site plans, line diagrams, and manufacturer spec sheets. Topics also covered include: rapid shutdown of systems, disconnect locations, point of interconnection requirements, roof fire access clearances, equipment/wiring installation, wire/breaker sizing, and signage. This course will be very beneficial for plan reviewers and inspectors, but will also be helpful for solar contractors and designers to better understand what information is required on solar PV plans. This course is based on the 2017 NEC and 2018 IBC/IRC. However, certain requirements in the 2020 NEC will also be explained.

Instructor Resume: Doug Smith, MCP, CBO Doug Smith has been an inspector for over 15 years and has been in the construction industry for over 21 years. He began his career with Kaysville City, Utah as a Building Inspector starting in early 2005 and worked for Kaysville City for almost 9 years. He then joined West Coast Code Consultants (WC3) in October of 2013. During his career he has obtained 19 ICC certifications including Certified Building Official and Certified Master Code Professional. As for his understanding of the building codes, you could say he?s ?well rounded,? but particularly he specializes in electrical code requirements and is especially knowledgeable on the topic of solar photovoltaics and energy storage systems (ESS). Doug has taught many electrical and solar photovoltaic classes over the years for various organizations in Utah. He has also taught classes in California, Nevada, Idaho, Montana, and Oregon. With WC3 he primarily performs electrical, solar PV, and ESS plan reviews. As far as solar and ESS reviews are concerned, typically he performs over 1,500 reviews each year for many jurisdictions in Utah, California and Idaho. The largest solar PV system plan review that he has performed was a 400 mega-watt California Energy solar PV project which includes over two million solar panels.
