Course Outline & Objectives:This course will identify the most common code violations often overlooked by contractors, plans examiners, and inspectors. Includes a specific focus on the theory behind the code requirements. Subjects covered include heating and cooling appliance installation requirements and instructions, exhaust systems with a focus on range hoods and dryer vents, mini-splits, duct systems, combustion air, venting, furnaces, air conditioners, boilers, gas piping systems, including CSST requirements. It also includes an open discussion on the significant comfort and efficiency benefits resulting from understanding and following ACCA Manuals J D & S. Additionally, the numerous direct links with the energy code will be included. This presentation includes numerous photos from the field. Questions and discussion are welcome. Objectives: Identify common code violations, understand code purpose and building science, why installation instructions are critical, benefits and efficiencies achieved through compliance.

Instructor Resume: Brent Ursenbach is the Salt Lake County Energy/Mechanical Code Official and ICC Combination Inspector. He retired from HVAC contracting in 2005 after 33 years working in the field and has now been Code Official for the past eight years. He currently serves on the Utah Chapter ICC Code Change and Development Committee, is President on the Rocky Mountain Gas Association (RMGA) Board of Directors, and is a member of the Utah UBCC Mechanical Advisory Committee. He also serves as a member of the ACCA Manual S Advisory Committee, working on updating the ACCA/ANSI Standard for residential HVAC equipment selection. He is actively involved in the legislative process working on issues such as education/licensure of HVAC technicians, zoning, building codes. and adoption of current energy conservation codes. Brent has presented numerous seminars and classes on energy, mechanical, and fuel gas code, as well as HVAC design principles.
