Course Outline & Objectives: | Basic Blueprint Reading, Estimating Tips, & Regulatory Updates
Estimating basics
Introduction to Construction Estimating provides a foundation for those interested in learning more about this important part of construction. It makes sense that if the success of your construction company is based on good estimating processes that you should start out by learning the basics. Class will discuss: organizing the estimate, take-offs, overhead and profit.
Blue print reading basics
This blueprint Reading course is an introductory course that provides the blueprint reading basics needed for residential and light commercial projects. This class will help guide you through the basics by teaching you how to understand the various lines, symbols, page numbering, cross sections, details, specifications, abbreviations and more. After learning this information, you will be better prepared to do take-offs and form a bid. Knowing how to successfully read and interpret blueprints is the foundation for a successful contracting career.
Pre-Construction agreements: Stop giving free bids and get paid for your time
Do you spend countless hours bidding on one job after another and end up rarely getting the work? Learn to get paid for your time in the pre-construction phases of a project and create a proactive process that leads to better communication, more successful projects, happier customers and higher profits. Pre construction services are used to help meet a client?s vision as well as match their construction budget. Using this approach will make sure a project is feasible and will enable the client to make educated decisions earlier. This class will address general contractors and sub-contractors approaches to being compensated for their involvement in the pre-construction phases.
Code changes, energy code updates and Utah amendments
Review the significant changes to the 2015 International Residential Code, including the Utah state amendments to the code. Know the requirements for building envelopes and why they are so important in today?s building industry. Most of today?s largest construction defect law suites are due to the builder and subcontractors lack of knowledge about water intrusion and how a five-dollar piece of flashing or putting a deck over living space could potentially put them out of business.
We will also address energy code and the changes that happened on Jan 1st along with a review of the Utah state amendments.
OSHA?s Respirable Crystalline Silica Standard for Construction
Workers who are exposed to respirable crystalline silica dust are at increased risk of developing serious silica-related diseases. OSHA?s new standard, that went into effect September 23, 2017, requires employers to take steps to protect workers from exposure to respirable crystalline silica.
We will be covering what the new standard requires of Construction employers big and small, including.
? What is Respirable Crystalline Silica.
? How Construction Workers Exposed to Respirable Crystalline Silica.
? What the Standard Requires.
? What Table 1 is.
? Control Methods.
? And additional Information.
Understanding Government Regulation for Contractors
There have been a lot of changes in contractor licensing over the past few years.
? Do you know what your contractor?s license allows you to do?
? How about the consequences for hiring un-licensed contractors?
? Does your contractor?s license allow you to sub-contract work to other contractors?
? Who are you allowed to pay with a 1099?
If you don?t know the answers to these questions and want to make sure you are operating with in the current state regulations this class is for you. This class will be spent covering the Utah Construction trades Licensing Act and Rules. We will be reviewing the definitions for General contractors and Specialty licenses (sub-contractors). We will cover the requirements to get a GC & a sub-contractors licenses and much, much more. You may be surprised to know what the current requirements are. The title of this class may appear boring; however, a lot of students say this is the part of class they learned most from.
