Course #18337 - Aggregate Quality and its Effect on Concrete

Course Expiration: September 20, 2023
Course Type: Contractor
Core Credit Hours: 1.0
HVAC Specific: No
Energy Specific: No
Course Name:Aggregate Quality and its Effect on Concrete
Course Outline & Objectives:Presentation Description: Aggregate accounts for the largest weight and volumetric proportion in concrete. Its physical and chemical properties highly influence the performance of concrete, such as workability, strength, and durability. For instance, the workability of fresh concrete greatly depends on the particle size distribution (grading) of the aggregate and its shape and texture. The moisture content of aggregate is a key factor when designing a proper water to cementitious materials (w/c) ratio. Reactive components in aggregate can induce alkali-silica reaction (ASR), which is not uncommon in the intermountain region. Concrete and aggregate petrography have been widely used for troubleshooting aggregate related problems. This presentation will highlight several case studies using petrography with other tests to demonstrate problems associated with aggregate quality, such as shrinkage cracking, low strength, ASR, etc. It will also showcase concrete petrography of lightweight aggregate and recycled aggregate. Learning Objectives: 1. What concrete/aggregate durability involves. 2. What the major physical and chemical properties of concrete aggregate are. 3. Case studies highlighting durability related deterioration in the intermountain region. 4. Integration of concrete petrography and other physical/chemical tests for engineering material troubleshooting.
