| Course Outline & Objectives: | Utah counties, cities and towns spend more tax dollars on roads than any other single item except education. Yet many miles of roads are in poor condition. Numerous roads were not constructed for modern traffic loads and volumes. Maintenance has often been inadequate, resulting in many badly deteriorated roads. Many roads need the application of basic principles of road design, construction, and maintenance.
This workshop will give the attendees an understanding of what goes into the construction and maintenance of a good road. There are certain common essentials to any good road, whether asphalt or gravel-surfaced, in cities or country. The instructor will cover each of these essentials, and participants will receive a useful reference manual. Topics covered include: designing for traffic loads and volumes; getting water away from road; using the best soils available; protecting your investment; designing for winter maintenance; and building on a firm foundation.
