Course Outline & Objectives:Learning Objectives o Explain the rules in the NEC Style Manual for definition placement in the 2017 NEC. o Recognize the changes made to the definition of accessible readily, or what we know in the industry as readily accessible. o Identify the new location of definitions associated with hazardous locations. o Define new and revised terms used in the 2017 NEC. o We'll also locate the requirements for reconditioned equipment. o Apply the new torque requirements for connections. Locate the new working space requirements for limited access installations. o Describe the requirements for labeling service equipment Introduction ? Course Overview Definitions, Changes, and Revisions (10 minutes) ? NEC Style Manual ? prepared under the guidance of the NEC Correlating Committee, and it's used to advise members of the code making panels on the required editorial style and arrangement of the NEC. ? Used as a practical working tool to assist in making the NEC as clear, usable, and unambiguous as possible. ? 2017 NEC Changes o Accessible readily o Readily accessible Chapter 5 Special Occupancies (10 minutes) ? Many definitions associated with hazardous locations have been relocated from chapter 5 to article 100. ? Let's take a look at the definition for combustible dust as an example. o Relocated from chapter 5 to article 100. ? Other definitions relocated from chapter 5 to article 100: o associated apparatus o combustible gas detection system o control drawing, dust type o intrinsically safe system o oil immersion o volatile flammable liquids. Revised Definitions: Building and Structure (5 minutes) ? The 2017 accomplishes cleaning up the previous definition ? The definition for a structure in the 2017 o Clarifying structure vs. equipment ? New definitions added to the 2017 NEC. o Field evaluation body, or FEB. o Field labeled Definition Revised: Receptacle (10 minutes) ? Due to changing technologies, the definition needed to be revised. o A contact device installed at the outlet for the connection of an attachment plug, or for the direct connection of electrical utilization equipment designed to mate with the corresponding contact device. Article 110 Reconditioned Equipment (5 minutes) ? New requirements in the 2017 NEC. ? Article 110 o An addition for reconditioned equipment. o The first change concerned is an informational note after the existing 110.3A1. o The new 110.21(A)(2), specifically for reconditioned equipment. o some type of descriptive marking that's going to be put on this equipment by those who recondition it o Exception to the new 110.21(A)(2) requirement states, this labeling or marking is not required in industrial occupancies where conditions of maintenance and Section 110.3(C) Listing (Product Certification) (5 minutes) ? 110.3C, dealing with a listing or product certification. ? The new 110.3C listing requirement requires product testing, evaluation, and listing or product certification to be performed by recognized qualified electrical testing labs ? There's also an informational note added Section 110.14(D) Torque Tools (Installation) (5 minutes) ? New requirement is going to correlate with the 110.3B requirement for installation and use of Torque. ? Annex I is the recommended tightening torque table. ? The new 110.14D requirement o A calibrated torque tool shall be used to achieve the indicated torque value, unless the equipment manufacturer has provided installation instructions for an alternative method of achieving the required torque. Section 110.16(B) Service Equipment Arc Flash Warning Label (10 minutes) ? Section 110.16B, dealing with service equipment arc flash warning labels. ? Enhances the existing 110.16A, ? Applies to electrical equipment such as switchboards, switchgear, panel boards, meter and socket enclosures, and motor control centers ? The nominal system voltage will have to be on the label o There is an exception that says the service equipment labeling shall not be required if an arc flash label is applied in accordance with its acceptable industry standards. ?
