Course Outline & Objectives:Moisture Management in Tiled Showers instructional material is from the Tile Council of North America (TCNA) Handbook which meets the construction standards and building codes. All specifications for tile installations must conform to local building codes, ordinances, trade standards and practices, and climatic conditions. Leaks and mold continue to pose serious problems for the construction industry. This seminar will compare traditional waterproofing systems with modern waterproofing technology to show how tiled showers have evolved. The fundamentals of both approaches, including proper design, execution, and function will be presented, with close attention paid to common errors, as well. The benefits of bonded waterproofing technology and how it has improved tiled showers will be stressed.Learning Objectives: At the end of this presentation, the participant will be able to:1. Identify the benefits and challenges associated with tiled showers.2. Understand the proper design and execution of tiled shower waterproofing systems.3. Recognize the benefits of bonded waterproofing technology and how it has revolutionized tiled showers.The Uncoupling PrincipleThis seminar will examine the Uncoupling Principle, which is now recognized in the Tile Council of America's 2001 Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation. Review the history behind the Uncoupling Principle and examine the evolution of tile setting techniques, along with the benefits and limitations of each stage of development.The individual functions that are inherent to an uncoupling system will be discussed and the major implications for tile and stone installations revealed.Learning Objectives: At the end of this program, the participant will be able to: 1. Comprehend the basics of the uncoupling principle and its relationship to the tile and stone industry;2. Recognize new areas of installation that can be attained through the utilization of an uncoupling system; 3. Interpret and apply the new details and applications found in the current TCA Handbook.

Apprenticing under his grandfather and father, the artistic trade of tile installation was learned. Adding to his experience as an installer, the past 22 years has been spent working in tile sales, facility management, and product development. Dee is currently employed with Schluter Systems serving as their Western Regional Commercial Sales Manager. Lending to his experience in the field, Dee has also been educated in the leading advancements of the industry products and use thereof. This, coupled with his working knowledge, he has had the opportunity to help teach and train architects, tile contractors, distributors, and designers throughout the Western United States the information needed to facilitate the industry. Dee is a Certified Tile Consultant (CTC) for the Ceramic Tile Institute of America (CTIOA)In the event that he has some spare time, Dee enjoys snow skiing, hiking, fishing, reading and spending time with family and friends. He currently resides in Salt Lake City, Utah with his wonderful wife and 3 very active children.
