o Identify what article 425 fixed resistance and electrode process heating equipment covers and what it does not cover.
o differentiate between PV systems and large-scale PV electric power production facilities.
o locate installation requirements for energy storage systems,
o recognize different types of stand-alone systems, define a micro-grid, and
o locate installation requirements for direct current micro-grids.

Definitions (10 minutes)
? NITMAM
o NITMAMs can be made by anyone if the NITMAM is a committee comment, a second revision, or a second correlating revision.
o once approved by the NFPA motions committee, they become Certified Amended Motions
? A tentative interim amendment or a TIA, are amendments to an NFPA standard
? CAMs
? Revision process
o Public proposals, the ROP panel meetings
? Change process from the 2014 to the 2017 NEC
? Anyone can submit a public input for change to the NEC
? Correlating committee.
o Their mission is to correlate the NEC within itself and with other NFPA standards.
NFPA Structure (10 minutes)
? In hierarchy order the NFPA standards council has purview over the correlating committee
? The correlating committee then has purview over the 19 individual code making panels.
? There's 19 code making panels and only one correlating committee.
o Each committee has between 25 and 35 seats
? Specific code making panel example: code making panel 12
o Each code making panel or CMP has a chairman or chairperson associated with it to give direction to.
Article 425 (10 min)
? New articles appearing in the 2017 NEC
? Article 425 fixed resistance and electrode process heating equipment.
o Public input 879 provided substantiation indicating the NEC did not have sufficient rules for installers and inspectors for these specialized systems
? The scope of article 425 covers fixed industrial process heating, employing electric resistance or electrode heating technology.
Article 691 (10 minutes)
? Large-scale photovoltaic electric power production facilities.
? The difference is between article 690 and new article 691.
o Eliminate AHJ professional risk when assessing compliance for these type of installations.
? The ability to enable system engineers the ability to use engineering best practices in the design of these large systems
? Electrical circuits and equipment shall be accessible only to qualified personnel.
o Qualified personnel is defined in article 100 of the NEC.
? Electric loads within the supply station are only used to power auxiliary equipment for the generation of the PV power.
Article 710, Article 712 and Article 706 (15 minutes)
Article 706
? Revision 3662 the substantiation stated that the scope of the current NEC provisions for storage
? Article 706 energy storage systems
o Part one will be general requirements.
o Part two circuit requirements.
o Part three will deal with electrochemical energy storage systems.
o Part four flow battery energy storage systems.
o Part five other storable technologies.
Article 710
? The new article 710 was supported by the original proposes and the correlating committee.
o It covers electric power production sources operating in standalone mode
Article 712
? DC micro-grids are related to the direct utilization of power from DC sources to DC loads
o LED lighting, communications equipment, computers and servers, varial speed motor drives, and HVAC equipment
? The NEC is sometimes a proactive document and sometimes is a reactive document because of the time it takes to work through the change process, it lags in technology that's out being deployed in the field already.
