The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) signed into law on July 26, 1990
The ADA is a wide-ranging civil rights law that prohibits, under certain circumstances, discrimination on the basis of disability
STATUTORY DEFINITION Disability
With respect to an individual, the term "disability" means
(A) a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of such individual;
(B) a record of such an impairment; or
(C) being regarded as having such an impairment.
42 U.S.C. 12102(2); see also 29 C.F.R. 1630.2(g). A person must meet the requirements of at least one of these three criteria to be an individual with a disability under the Act.

The 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design was adopted by the DOJ.
March 15, 2011 - Effective Date
The rule will become effective March 15, 2011.
March 15, 2012 - Compliance Date
On March 15, 2012, compliance with the 2010 Standards will be required for new construction and alterations and barrier removal.
