| Course Outline & Objectives: | This 4-hour Core continuing education course covers the National Electrical Code provisions on overcurrent protection of conductors, equipment, services, feeders, and branch circuits, satisfying the Utah Electrician core education requirement under Utah Admin Code R156-55b-304(2) (National Electrical Code as adopted or proposed for adoption).
Hour 1 covers NEC Article 240 foundations: definitions of overcurrent, overload, short circuit, and ground fault; Sec. 240.4 conductor protection including the small-conductor rule, next-higher-standard-size rule, and tap rules; Sec. 240.6 standard ampere ratings; and Sec. 240.20 through Sec. 240.24 device location and grouping rules. Hour 2 covers overcurrent protection of branch circuits, feeders, and services with worked examples. Hour 3 covers NEC Article 430 motor and motor-controller overcurrent protection. Hour 4 covers NEC Article 450 transformer overcurrent protection plus identification of when supplementary, supervised industrial, or selective coordination provisions apply.

NEC citations reference the edition currently adopted by Utah under Utah Code Sec. 15A-2-103.
