Course Outline & Objectives:Introduction to best practices for the design, construction, and operation of energy-efficient homes. Students will learn to evaluate existing buildings and present suggested safety, indoor environmental quality and efficiency upgrades. Students will learn to: 1. Explain the purpose of energy audits and the priorities of weatherization. 2. Compare ventilation systems in residential construction. 3. Identify indoor pollutants and pollutant control strategies. 4. Identify moisture management options. 5. Explain the concepts of blower door and duct blaster tests. 6. Identify types of lighting and appliances and the amount of energy each consumes. 7. Describe different types of water heaters and ways to increase water-heating efficiency. 8. Identify different types of insulation and their efficiency. 9. Explain different characteristics of windows and doors and their efficiency. 10. Discuss principles of energy including transformation and heat flow processes, electric circuits and devices, control circuits, and home electrical wiring. 11. List different types of heating systems, combustion heating basics, safety & efficiency, heating controls and distribution systems. 12. List different types of cooling systems and describe how they operate: cooling with ventilation, evaporative coolers and air conditioners.
